ERN's Kevin Johnson Discusses Need for "Boring Election Officials" on Democracy Lab Podcast
ERN Executive Director Kevin Johnson joined the Democracy Lab podcast to explore a uniquely American feature of election administration: the extensive role political parties and elected officials play in overseeing elections. At a time of growing polarization, that arrangement raises important questions about neutrality, public trust, and conflicts of interest.
As Kevin observes:
We are preconditioned to think that any institution that’s going to be in the management of elections has to have an R and a D…that the parties have an inherent right [to be] there. Basically no other modern democracy has that instinct.
